"As
a teacher for 9 years, I had the opportunity to teach in
several different systems and with lots of different
personalities. Through these experiences, I learned
that in order to treat students fairly, you have to meet
them where they are and build them up.
Treating students as if they are all the same or that
they have the same knowledge base is the most unfair act
a teacher can perform. We must understand that
diversity in the learning community exists and it is
vital that teachers meet the needs of the classroom
through differentiation of instruction. Reflecting
on the learning process is also vital to the
demystification of learning differences. Only when
students become aware of themselves and their learning
styles can they begin to accommodate and advocate for
themselves. And isn't it our ultimate goal to make
students into independent lifelong learners?" |

"I was introduced to Patrick Beaver Learning Resource
Center through a Parent Support Group that they
sponsored. This was shortly after my oldest son was
diagnosed with ADHD. They were such a resource for me as
I struggled for answers. Shortly thereafter, they asked
me to join the Board of Directors. It is my passion to
help individuals that struggle with learning
differences. I feel our agency has been very successful
in addressing various issues in this regard and is
making our community a better place to be. I am very
proud to be a part of this mission."

"Being trained as an elementary school teacher I was very
much aware of children and their learning. However, when
my son showed difficulties in reading and written
expression I could only help him in ways that I knew and
had been trained. Upon looking for help locally there
was a problem. Few people could help or understand his
needs. Many were patient and also had children with
similar problems. Therefore upon his death, I looked to
memorialize him in some way by helping others. This came
through the creation of the Patrick Beaver Learning
Resource Center and with others who have the same desire
to help children to learn. My goal is to continue to try
to help those who have different learning patterns and
build confidence in themselves to carry throughout their
lives."

"As
a special educator, I am most frustrated when a student
is not learning to read (or write or do math) because we
the educators haven't received the training we need to
teach him or her. We can and must give all teachers the
preparation they need! We can and must teach all
children! Their future depends on it, and PBLRC can
help make this happen. That's why I serve on this
board."

"I
serve on the Board of Directors for Patrick Beaver
Learning Resource Center because I am committed to
seeing that all children have the necessary resources
for success in school. Through research and direct
experience, we know that children come with both unique
gifts and abilities not yet developed. As we seek to
create a stronger local community, we have a
responsibility for reaching out to and supporting area
children who struggle with learning differences." |

"I
serve on the Board of the Patrick Beaver Learning
Resource Center because I know how valuable it is to
give teachers the tools to help children to be
successful. Helping and understanding that all children
can be successful, even children that learn differently,
is at the heart of what we are trying to accomplish. The
Schools Attuned program is key to improving education
for all children by giving teachers the information and
support they need to help all children. It is vital
that we, as a community, support our public schools." |

"When my children began school eight years ago it was an
eye-opening experience for my wife and I – crowded
classes, part-time assistants and children who were in
classrooms they had no business in. The teachers are
spread thin and the support they get is, in reality,
minimal due to budget restraints. As we found that one
of our children has some learning differences, we also
discovered there is little help offered to parents,
children or teachers faced with these issues. The work
of the Patrick Beaver Learning Resource Center focuses
on empowering teachers, staff members, students and
parents to deal with differences through training and
available resource materials. Education is a vital part
of any community, and serving on this board gives me the
opportunity to affect positive changes in our education
system and therefore our community."
